Hold the Phone! They Might Cancel Red Band Society?!

Red Band Society@GirlontheProwl here and I have something I need to get off my mind. I started a show this fall called Red Band Society… and you know, I figured if the show had Dave Annable in it then, okay, it was probably worth checking out… So I did, and while my reasoning for watching it was shallow and convoluted, what I found was something more than that. The show isn’t just about sick kids and it isn’t just about hot doctors. It draws on the concerns that many teens, and sometimes event adults, have growing up and addresses them—love, drugs, alcohol, money, family, friends. It takes really bad situations and offers viewers a little bit of hope. I know I’m no doctor, and that this may not be as “realistic” as some people think it should be, but it’s creative fiction. Nowhere is it written that in a fictional world, a group of kids—a band of brothers—can’t be sick and live their lives while terrorizing a hospital. I mean, wasn’t it Aristotle who said “hope is a waking dream”?

Needless to say, I realized, for me anyway, it was the first time, in a very long time, that FOX had put something remotely interesting out…my only concern was “You know…it is They tend to just scrap everything after the first season”. I feel like FOX is the place where shows go to die…no offense. Let’s see… how many times over the years has FOX cancelled a show that was really good?…there was Tru Calling, which I think made it to a second season but got cancelled ¼ of the way in. Then there was The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which made it two seasons, but then went bust. Oh and let’s not forget Firefly—I know a lot of people were upset over that one. And I am sure there are others that I can’t think of in this moment that I’m sure you are listing off in your head… but, Kids, we may be adding Red Band Society onto that list (http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/11/26/fox-red-band-society-production-halted/). I know, it hurts, but I’m not sure what we could possibly do about it. I do know, no decisions have been officially made so maybe some pestering is in order—but do they really even listen to us any way?

That being said, I’d just like to take this opportunity to say that I’m not trying to bash the network, I’m just saying there’s something not right about the system. I don’t know if networks take this into consideration, but the ratings system, in this day and age, is so While I understand that it is the only system they can really use to see if they have an audience, they really need to come to terms with the fact that people don’t really watch “live” TV anymore—The Internet’s taken over! People tend to watch shows when they have the time, but that doesn’t mean they love the show any less! It just means that life has gotten in the way of our free time! But rest assured, people do record using DVRs and they also stream (legally and illegally unfortunately). There are also those people who really enjoy doing the Netflix-Binge-Watch…yeah that’s a thing now. Some people just wait till whole seasons are out and then, when they get a chance, they watch all 22 episodes in one go. Yeah I’m pointing at you out there, the people on the other side of this screen, I know some of you do this!

But let’s be serious for a second. There are other ways of analyzing this information right? Twitter Pages anyone? I just think it would be a mistake to cancel another good show…and if they are just doing this for attention then that’s so not cool. I don’t want to see this show go too, but as much as I’d like to be an idealist, the realist in me thinks history has a way of repeating itself, doesn’t it FOX?

Well those are my thoughts, do any of you have anything you want to share about Red Band Society, or any other shows FOX has hit and run?

Well if you do, feel free to comment down below and don’t forget to send your comments of support for Red Band Society directly to FOX—it’s a good show, let’s try to get it a couple of more years.

[Update]:

Well, it looks like they’ve set the dates for the final three episodes of the season. Unfortunately, this means the show has officially been canceled, but don’t let that stop you from showing some Red Band love.

The final episodes according to EW will air as follows:

  • January 31, 2015 at 9:00p.m.
  • February 7, 2015 starting at 8:00 p.m. followed by the final episode at 9:00 p.m.

Don’t forget to set your PVRs.

Cheers,

I agree with you totally. I almost cried my eyes out like a little baby when I heard the news. They shouldn’t take it off they need to keep it. But they wont listen to the people. They say it hasn’t gotten enough viewers. This is stupid it teaches value in life and what to do if you have problems like you said its not just about where they are sick or the hot doctors its about problems teens face today. This is a outrage. I demand to be heard.

      Hi Allie,

I hear your outrage! And I’m really glad you took the time out to express how you feel. It’s always nice to know there are people out there who care, but as we know, more often than not, Fox’s decisions are pretty much cement. But here’s to being a Red Bander–perhaps we can start a Twitter Revolution.
