@GirlontheProwl here, if you’re anything like me washing your hair everyday has become a bit of a routine, if not a religion. It’s gotten to the point where if I skip washing my hair during a shower it will drive me bonkers. But as you very well know, washing your hair everyday is really bad—you know, sulphates and all. It’s kind of like the equivalent of dying you hair—it kills it, strips it of its natural oils, and starts lacking in nourishment. I know all this, and yet I still do it because I can’t stand the feel and look my hair gets if I don’t. Let’s face it though, the reason I feel the need to wash my hair all the time is because I’ve conditioned my hair to over work and produce more oils in an effort to counteract the daily washing. So, in an attempt to rectify the situation, I figured there must be an alternative, and there is—dry shampoo. It doesn’t hurt your hair as badly, and it gives you the fresh look and smell you’ve been looking for. But how do you find the right dry shampoo for your hair? Well, it’s pretty much trial and error, but here are two products that I have tried that might help you in narrowing down your options.
The first one I tried was the TRESemme Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo. It comes in a bottle like hairspray and is about $6. I, however, was able to get it for $4, which sort of explains why I picked it up in the first place. I find that this product is generally on sale a lot, which probably should have tipped me off as to whether I was going to like it or not. As instructed you are supposed to spray the shampoo into your hair from a distance—like you would with hairspray—let it set, and then comb it through. Unfortunately I am not a fan of this product, although I know many people who seem to like it well enough, I think you can do better. I have thick, black hair so when I sprayed the product into my hair it left a shiny residue that started separating my hair into thick strands. Needless to say, it wasn’t my ideal look and it prompted me to wash my hair right away. It didn’t make my hair voluminous nor did it give it a “fresh start”, it did however smell nice so it had that going for it.
The next one I tried was the Dove Refresh + Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo. You can pretty much pick this up at any of your local grocery or drug stores and it’ll cost you about $4, and if you’re really lucky it’ll be on sale! This one is much cheaper than the previous one, but trust me, it is much more effective. I sprayed the shampoo at a distance on my roots and then with my fingers I massaged the shampoo into my hair like I would if I were taking a shower (note: make sure you lift and part your hair so that you can really get at all the desired areas). I then let it sit before combing it out and using a blow dryer on it’s lowest setting, just to put some volume back into my hair—mind you I took some liberties and it doesn’t actually tell you to do this on the bottle. The end result looked great and above all smelled great, so I would definitely recommend this one.
Overall, I think it would be good to note that everyone has different types of hair and some products like the TRESemme may work well for you even if it didn’t work well for me. I do prefer the Dove and would encourage you to try it, but like I said above, it’s all trial and error and you really just need to find something that works well for you and your hair.
