Hold the Phone! They Might Cancel Red Band Society?!
@GirlontheProwl here and I have something I need to get off my mind. I started a show this fall called Red Band Society… and you know, I figured if the show had Dave Annable in it then, okay, it was probably worth checking out… So I did, and while my reasoning for watching it was shallow and convoluted, what I found was something more than that. The show isn’t just about sick kids and it isn’t just about hot doctors. It draws on the concerns that many teens, and sometimes event adults, have growing up and addresses them—love, drugs, alcohol, money, family, friends. It takes really bad situations and offers viewers a little bit of hope. I know I’m no doctor, and that this may not be as “realistic” as some people think it should be, but it’s creative fiction. Nowhere is it written that in a fictional world, a group of kids—a band of brothers—can’t be sick and live their lives while terrorizing a hospital. I mean, wasn’t it Aristotle who said “hope is a waking dream”? Continue reading
High Rise by JG Ballard
@GirlontheProwl here. During my third year at university, I had a professor who turned me on to the likes of Mr. JG Ballard. I’d never heard of him before and I didn’t have much in the way of expectations for him. He was just some old dead guy who wrote books that couldn’t possibly be relevant to me…right? Wrong. I couldn’t have been more wrong. While Ballard is an acquired taste, and some may even find him a difficult read, this man had a talent for creating some—pardon my French—fucked up shit. And it isn’t without some thought that I turn him onto you. So to start you off, here’s Ballard’s High Rise. Continue reading
13 Must See Horror Movies
@GirlontheProwl here. If you get to know me, you’ll come to find that I have an affinity for horror movies. It all started at the tender age of four when I first watched the three part, 1997 version of The Shining—and quite frankly, it just so happened to also be the last time I watched it. Now, while I still can’t bring myself to watch The Shining (yes, I realize it probably isn’t as scary as it was back then), I no longer find movies extremely terrifying, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because it now takes a lot to scare me, but it’s bad thing because well…it takes a lot to scare me. But not to worry, in my quest to find the ultimate horror movie, I’ve come across some very cool flicks. So in honour of Halloween and well, just because, here are my top thirteen favourite horror movies to date.

With only a few more weeks to go, I figure what better way to celebrate this spooky occasion than to offer some insight into Vancouver’s Halloween festivities. So fellow Vancouverites and other international friends, if you happen to find yourself in the Vancouver area this October, here are a few places to check out to get yourself into the Halloween spirit. Merch Haul: Dry Shampoo
@GirlontheProwl here, if you’re anything like me washing your hair everyday has become a bit of a routine, if not a religion. It’s gotten to the point where if I skip washing my hair during a shower it will drive me bonkers. But as you very well know, washing your hair everyday is really bad—you know, sulphates and all. It’s kind of like the equivalent of dying you hair—it kills it, strips it of its natural oils, and starts lacking in nourishment. I know all this, and yet I still do it because I can’t stand the feel and look my hair gets if I don’t. Let’s face it though, the reason I feel the need to wash my hair all the time is because I’ve conditioned my hair to over work and produce more oils in an effort to counteract the daily washing. So, in an attempt to rectify the situation, I figured there must be an alternative, and there is—dry shampoo. It doesn’t hurt your hair as badly, and it gives you the fresh look and smell you’ve been looking for. But how do you find the right dry shampoo for your hair? Well, it’s pretty much trial and error, but here are two products that I have tried that might help you in narrowing down your options. Continue reading
Ten Things You Need To Do In Order To Survive University
@GirlontheProwl here, so after a month of being back at University, I can’t help but notice all those first year students who are still bright eyed and just about ready to shit themselves. I get it though, that transition phase is still fresh and with midterms around the corner it suddenly feels like Shark Week. Only it doesn’t have to. I know it’s only a matter of time before they become jaded, but I figure maybe offering them a couple of tips might ease the pain. So here are a few things I’ve learned over the years—and these can apply to just about anyone in uni, not just freshmen—that may or may not help you survive your post-secondary years. Beautiful Creatures
@GirlontheProwl here, after a summer of relentless fun, these past couple of weeks of being back at uni (short for University) have been what I’d like to describe as insufferable. Now while I have many words to describe my kinship with this institution of learning—tiresome, back-aching, spirit-breaking, tear-inducing—I decided I was due for a much-needed break. However, like every university student out there, when I say break I really mean a long period of procrastination because let’s face it, there is no such thing as having a break at uni. So I decided what better way to take my “break” than by re-watching one of my favourite movies—Beautiful Creatures. Continue reading
