Recipe: Rice Krispie Sqaures with M&Ms
Here we go again! With less than two days left till Christmas, the elf and I decided to make a quick and easy treat that you can whip up for just about any party or event. Now, this age old recipe (I’m not actually sure how old, but let’s go with it) is a holiday staple in many households and, of course, there are many ways to make them—this is ours.
To start, all we needed were the following:
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons of butter or margarine
- 1 package of jumbo marshmallows
- 1 bag of baking M&Ms
- 6 cups of Rice Krispies
Now, the recipe yields about 12 large servings give or take, so in order to make enough we doubled the recipe, which produced roughly 32 medium sized servings.
We began by putting the butter into a stockpot (we used half a stick, but unless you plan to double the recipe, like we did, you won’t need to). We then stirred the butter at medium to low heat until it melted before adding the marshmallows.
Since it is the holiday season, and Marshmallows seem to be disappearing faster than Adele Tickets in North America (kidding, you’re more likely to find Marshmallows than Adele tickets!), we used mini marshmallows, which worked just as well.
Note: 10 mini marshmallows equals 1 jumbo (I used 10 cups for my doubled recipe)
After mixing for what seemed like forever, the marshmallows began to become a nice smooth consistency, which is an indicator that it is ready to come off the stove. Once we took it off the burner, we added in our Rice Krispies.
We used the red and green holiday edition of Rice Krispies to make them more festive.
Then we made sure the marshmallows and the cereal were fully mixed together before adding in the bag of M&Ms… now the key here is to be really gentle so that the m&ms don’t break open, but if they do, it’s okay because they just end up looking like chocolate squares with chunks of M&Ms.
After that, all we did was scoop the mix onto a pan, spread it out, and then press it down with the palms of our hands (or you can use a rolling pin…whatever is easier!).
Cover the pan in wax paper because among other things, it makes cleaning up a whole lot easier…so just use it will ya?
Then we just waited for them to cool down before cutting and shaping them in any way we wanted.
And viola! You’ve got yourself a really easy, no-muss-no-fuss kind of Christmas treat that literally takes minutes.
